If you have been diligently training for your first cycling event, and you feel that you are physically and mentally prepared for the challenge, you may not be fully ready yet. Here are some of the same things the pros do to get ready for every bike race in addition to physical training.

Get your entry form in as early as possible. If your race is not local, check online for information such as categories, start times, distances and release forms. Preregistering can help you avoid prerace tension and worry.

Inspect your bike at least a day or two before the event. Finding out that you need repair work or a new part on the day of the race is too late.

Pack everything you will need for the race in a single bag if possible. Try to include some snacks in the bag because you will be hungry after the race, and it tends to be hard to find healthy food at most racing events.

Eat a good meal the night before, and get plenty of rest.

Arrive early so you have time to relax. It will also allow you to stretch, take some practice laps and warm up properly.

Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water before the race, but make sure you are able to relieve yourself if you need to before the starting pistol goes off.

Being a member of the cycling community can be great fun, but there is danger in riding that not all cyclist seem to head. The sad fact of the matter is that people get hurt everyday while cycling. Accidents do happen; serious accidents do happen. Luckily, there are a few safety tips that can make sure every, single ride is enjoyable and safe.

1. Always wear a helmet and take safety precautions. It can not be said enough but wearing a helmet can safe your life. While avoiding accidents is the main concern of most people there are moments when accidents are unavoidable. This is when helmets come in handy.

2. Ride with the flow of traffic. Riding against traffic can be much more dangerous that most people think. Those riding against traffic are giving drivers blind spots in which a collision can easily take place. Drivers are not expecting traffic to come at them, which makes it harder to respond. Always ride with traffic.

3. Ride on the street and follow traffic laws. When you get to a red light, stop. When there isn’t a ton of space between two cars don’t try and squeeze through. Think of cycling the same way you think of driving a car. If you wouldn’t run a red light in your car you shouldn’t do it on your bike, either.

Bicycles come with frames made in different heights. The first step in choosing the right bike is to make sure the frame height is correct for your body. When seated on the bicycle seat, your feet should be able to touch the ground in a stable and sturdy manner. This is important for when you need to stop the bike as well as when you get on and off of it. Bike frames also come in men’s styles with high cross bars or women’s styles with low cross bars. The men’s frame requires the leg to be swung out over the back tire for mounting the bike, while the women’s frame can be stepped over.

Bikes also come with hand brakes and levers to control the different speeds. Bicycles can have speeds ranging anywhere from three to more than eighteen. For basic bike riding purposes, a bike doesn’t need any more speeds than three to ten. The different gears allow for reduced effort in pedaling on the part of the rider. These are used when the terrain changes during the ride or when the rider needs to go uphill. A bike seat is also available in different styles ranging from the basic hard plastic to the comfortable styles made of foam with gel inserts.
