Colorado National Monument
Description
The Colorado National Monument ride is a 46 mile out and back ride
through the Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction and Fruita.
The ride features spectacular panaromic views of the canyon and the
red rock sculptures as you wind along the plateau rim. It does
cost $3 dollars for bicycles so be sure to bring some cash with you.
The Route
From the East entrance of the Colorado National Monument
near Grand Junction ride West on Rim Rock Drive climbing up and then
descending down to the West entrance then back. Optionally, a shorter
and easier loop tour can be made from West side by going South on Rt.
340 then South on South Broadway and then taking a right on South Camp
Road and heading south back to the East entrance. Maps can be picked
up at either entrances.

Hazards
The traffic along Rim Rock Drive is very light and slow. There
are dark tunnels that bore through the red canyon walls not far from
the East and West entrances and although fun they can be a little scary.

Difficulty
The most difficult portion of the ride is the few mile stretches climbing
up from the East and West entrances. Once you are up on the plateu
rim the ride is made up of rolling hills.

Overall Rating: 
This is a must ride as it not only has breathtaking views of the red
rock canyon and the rock sculptures, but also has become a famous cycling
route, being made famous back in the 80's with the Coors Classic and
featured in the movie American Flyers.
