The Route

From Brecekenridge ride south on Highway 9 climbing up over Hoosier Pass and descending down into Fairplay.  Alternatively, start in Fairplay and ride to Breckenridge and back.

Hazards

The traffic can sometimes be heavy and the road shoulder disppears not long after you leave Breckenridge.  Also, the north side is also very curvy and the road is in poor condition so take care on the descent.  As in all high elevation rides wear sun tan lotion, bring a jacket just in case, and of course lots of water.

Difficulty

With 1900 ft. elevation gain from Breckenridge to the crest of Hoosier Pass and another 1500 ft. of elevation gain from Fairplay to the pass this ride has some good climbing. Coming from either side the gradient starts low and then gradually increases upwards though the switchbacks to the top of the pass..

Overall Rating: 4 stars

This is a good challenging ride crossing over the Continental divide twice with views of fourteeners and the surrounding Arapahoe and Pike National Forest..
